I REALLY love how you did the planet in the last frame!
btw....how DID you do that??? (if I may be so bold as to ask)
The ships are 3D and overlayed onto the planet and then I added the combat effects to fit the scene. I hope it comes across properly is all, re-entry and lots of pew pews. And it gets much worse haha
And we do what we have to! I'm not above using Google Sketchup for buildings and cityscapes. (I seriously SUCK at perspective architecture drawing) So whatever works say I! (besides they do that at Marvel too, so if the pros do it, I don't feel too bad about it.)
Really, I don't consider it a cheat. Comic artists are visual storytellers, not Renaissance master painters. We're out to tell a story, not create the next Mona Lisa. And anything that aids in telling the story is good in my book.
For the ships I've been using Swift3D because it's simple and exports directly to flash with some nice results.
And I've other software called Sculptris that is very easy to use. Its like working with modeling clay and it's free too.
But, if that works for you, have at it! I like the results
Cityscapes are hard and are just a pain to render by hand so I agree, screw it and 3D that crap up haha.
If you're curious here's a link to an online site that has a ton of them: [link]
Honestly I don't read many comics, which is odd for a comic creator I guess eh? I read a lot of spiderman of the clone saga (Very unpopular apparently) some random mangas etc. I guess I'll have golden age comics to add to my list hehe.
